Ramesh Gorjala’s work focuses on traditional Indian heritage and culture, through intricate and lyrical mythological portrayals of various gods and goddesses, celestial beings, heroes and sacred animals. His unique technique fuses Kalamkari – a historical art form that his birthplace of Srikalahasti is renowned for – with vibrant contemporary aesthetics. His palette of gold, red and green creates a rich yet natural feel, while his powerful cast of subjects—from Hanuman, Krishna and Arjuna to Buddha, Vishnu and the elephant god Ganesh—rendered with great sensitivity and attention to detail, are recast in forms that transcend obvious religious representations.... Gorjala does not restrict himself to a single protagonist in his canvases, often choosing to integrate subjects, using multiple figures and images composed into a broader unified character. Fragments of text or the sometimes repeated element of the checkerboard pattern (shades of black, white and grey) in the background often add a modern and dynamic twist to his pieces that have a largely traditional and spiritual feel.
