A SOLO EXHIBITION BY PRIYANKA AELAY

The forest occupies a central position in Priyanka Aelay’s new body of work. Her paintings present it not simply as a landscape, but as a complex environment in which different forms of life coexist. Animals appear within dense vegetation—sometimes alone, sometimes in pairs or groups—while distinctions between terrestrial, aquatic and aerial worlds become deliberately fluid. A fox may inhabit the same visual space as a tiger, while foliage can shift into coral and water can assume the qualities of sky. These transformations allow Aelay to consider the forest as both a physical environment and an imaginative space.

Working in fine layers of acrylic on linen, Aelay constructs landscapes that move between observation and invention. Her approach is informed by her academic research in film studies and visual culture, particularly her engagement with folklore, myth and popular storytelling, in which the forest functions as a site of uncertainty, transformation and trial.

Aelay’s landscapes resist clear boundaries. Vegetation, water, sky and animal life intersect and transform into one another, suggesting an interconnected ecology rather than separate habitats. The animals can
be read both literally and symbolically, allowing questions of belonging, solitude, companionship and coexistence to emerge through the landscape itself.

Her treatment of colour and botanical detail reflects her long-standing interest in the miniature painting tradition, particularly its highly constructed environments and sophisticated use of colour. Rather than reproducing that tradition, she draws from its visual strategies, developing a contemporary pictorial language in which scale, transparency, pattern and spatial ambiguity become important structural devices.

It Will Rain Again When We Meet brings together these concerns around landscape, folklore, memory and interconnectedness. Aelay’s forests occupy a space between the observed world and the worlds produced by stories, offering fragments, encounters and visual clues through which viewers can construct their own readings.

KYNKYNY presents “Visual Disobedience”, a group exhibition featuring Yuvan Bothysathuvar, S Ravi Shankar, Saravanan Parasuraman and Ganesh Selvaraj. Lines are among the most elemental structures through which we apprehend the world. They describe, contain and interrupt space; establish boundaries, generate rhythm and movement, and give form to the visible. Alongside geometry, perspective, colour, texture and light, line becomes a means through which artists construct and interrogate space. In Visual Disobedience, these fundamental elements are explored through material, predominantly paper, alongside a singular and striking engagement with iron.

The exhibition brings together four artists whose practices engage abstraction through an intimate investigation of line, geometry, colour, form and material. Their work may be situated within a broader lineage of Indian abstraction, particularly the modernist experiments that emerged from the Madras Art Movement. Artists such as K.C.S. Paniker and L. Munuswamy developed vocabularies drawing upon geometry, symbolism, philosophy, vernacular visual traditions and the spatial possibilities of the picture plane. Rather than treating abstraction as a departure from lived experience, this strand of Indian modernism frequently located the abstract within systems of knowledge, perception and cosmology.

The artists inherit aspects of this legacy while subjecting them to distinctly contemporary processes of making. Paper, which constitutes the overwhelming majority of the works, is treated not simply as a support or surface, but as an active and transformative material. Through cutting, folding, layering, constructing and manipulating it, the artists push paper beyond its conventional two-dimensional limitations. Flat sheets acquire volume; lines advance or recede; planes shift through perspective; and geometry, repetition and vibrant colour combine to create optical illusions and unexpected visual effects.

The large iron sculpture extends this exploration into another material, creating a dialogue between mass and void, form and line, solidity and space. Across the exhibition, familiar materials are transformed into complex visual experiences, continually challenging our perception of what is flat and what is dimensional. Together, the works invite us to look again, disrupting the expected relationships between line, form, colour, depth and space.

THE URBAN BIOME
A Group Exhibition featuring Krisha Bhuva, Nivedita Shinde, N.Divya, Simran Yagyik, Sunil K, Hemanth Kumar

This exhibition explores the relationships between humans and the environments we inhabit, both indoors and out. The spaces we occupy are not merely arrangements of walls, volumes and surfaces, but living constellations shaped by objects, structures, habits and the many forms of life that coexist within them.

Things rarely exist in isolation. Objects gather around other objects, spaces acquire particular rhythms, and patterns emerge through acts of intention, neglect, efficiency, convenience or chance. A carefully arranged cupboard and the organic growth of a neighbourhood are not entirely different phenomena; both reveal how human behaviour leaves traces and gives form to the world around us. In turn, these environments shape the way we think, move and relate to one another, even as they remain products of our desires, anxieties and routines.

Seen in this way, objects, structures and landscapes become active participants rather than passive settings. They enter into relationships with one another, generating narratives that unfold through proximity, accumulation and use. Humans are only one set of actors within this larger ecology, continuously influencing and being influenced by the worlds they create.

Yet these environments are never exclusively human. They are shared with plants, animals and countless other living beings that respond to changing conditions and reshape them in turn. Together, these interdependent relationships form a kind of urban biome—an intricate ecology shaped by cultural, social and economic forces, and one that is especially complex within contemporary India.

Through these works, the exhibition invites us to observe the subtle exchanges between the sentient and the inanimate, between individuals and systems, and between the spaces we construct and those that ultimately construct us.
