Smruthi Gargi Eswar

Smruthi Gargi Eswar is drawn to the idea of imagery as a form of documentation; a tool for building collective memory. Her artistic practice began while she was a student of The Valley School, KFI, and was further developed at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath and the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. After briefly dabbling in photography and graphic design, Eswar returned to fine art with a multi-disciplinary approach, employing a range of mediums from digital art to terracotta and painting with acrylic-on-canvas. Her work is developed through an investigation into personal memory and lesser-known mythologies, and considers the tangible connections that remain between the past and the present day. Through shows, performances and residencies, Eswar has shown her work in Kochi, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Mumbai, in addition to Berlin, Budapest and New York. Moreover, her photographs have been published in India and the Philippines. She is currently a board member of international artist-run NGO Art in Social Structures, which sees art as a tool to enhance societal frameworks. She lives between Bengaluru and New Delhi.
