ABOUT THE ARTIST

Description

Shilo Shiv Suleman is a Bangalore-based visual artist, who focuses on the intersections between magical realism, art for social change and technology. Her work encompasses illustration, installation and tech-art, with large scale installations for The Burning Man Festival and apps that react to your brainwaves, featured on TED. She is the founder-director of ‘The Fearless Collective’, an outfit that engages with gender issues and promotes art for social change. She has also worked with communities across the world by facilitating and leading public art interventions, including indigenous communities in Brazil, displaced and migrant communities in Beirut, queer activists in South Africa and transgender activists in Pakistan.

In 2014, Suleman’s collaborations with a neuroscientist to create art that interacts with your brainwaves and other biofeedback sensors made her the recipient of several grants and residencies, including an honorarium grant from Burning Man for the interactive project Pulse and Bloom. This biofeedback installation brought together artists, architects, entrepreneurs, builders and neurotechnologists. Her Semiprecious series, on the other hand, focuses on the primary forces of nature: rivers, mountains, the movement of tectonic plates, wind currents, photosynthesis, rocks, moss and minerals. “All kinds of invisible, microcosmic and macrocosmic love stories, and how sometimes one can be made to feel so damn small and semiprecious,” she explains.
