Suresh Kumar’s work is strongly inspired by the environment around him. To him, nature is both muse and the truest expression of himself – “the source of energy for [all] existence.” Through his art, he seeks to explore the emotional and sensorial responses that are evoked when we truly observe the diversity of the natural world. Initially inspired by the Impressionists and later by the Abstract Expressionists, he is driven by the beauty inherent in the shapes, forms and colours of the natural world.
“Colours are a major inspiration for me,” Kumar writes, “because it’s what first attracts us. Then later we tend to feel the texture, [look at] surface and volume. This is how our senses react to anything.” To Kumar, painting is a deeply personal and spiritual experience, extremely rewarding even if ephemeral. This underlines his approach to painting, which prizes the process, the primal instinct, and values the emotive first and foremost.
