ABOUT THE ARTIST

Description

Shashidhar Lohar is a master at using lines to express textures and forms. Although he has worked in other mediums, Lohar is best recognised for his graphic woodcuts and pen and ink drawings. His works often create an atmosphere like that of a hallucination or dream, bringing together dissimilar patterns in irregular formats and combining human figures, natural elements and man-made objects. Lohar depicts movement, rage and frustration with ease, and an inescapable kinetic vigour may be observed in his art. Admirable in its restraint, it is usually used to depict the forces of nature: churning seas and keening winds. Nature forms a significant theme in his works, and he often uses symbols such as fish and trees, and depicts humans in interaction with the natural world. In Lohar’s art, unusual frames (including metafictions where he presents pictures within pictures like nesting Russian dolls), intricate detail, and delicate shading techniques all come together to create rich visual textures and narratives.
