FADING FRONTIERS

Ten contemporary artists explore mysterious borderless territories
where human worlds intersect, collide and merge with nature.

KYNKYNY’s latest exhibition is an inspired and thought-provoking exploration of mysterious, overlapping terrains and shared geographies between humans and nature. Ten leading contemporary artists contemplate our complex relationship with the natural world in these turbulent times of climate upheaval and change. The featured artworks do not depict nature in isolation or as a separate entity to be admired from a distance, but as a sentient, vital force. The continual theme running through the exhibition is the interconnected nature of everything. All living beings are thrust together in a fragile web of life, sometimes sharing space in tenuous ecosystems fraught with territorial conflicts, and at other times coexisting in states of harmony as they navigate changing habitats and blurred boundaries. The exhibition is a mix of many worlds – the artworks journey through tribal lands immersed in folk wisdom, primordial landscapes that evoke a sense of home and magic realist rainforests. Nature is also reimagined in symbols and metaphors to express the language of the human psyche and subconscious. Amidst all the beauty, the exhibition does not shy away from documenting the big environmental issues like disappearing forest habitats.

SANDILYA THEUERKAUF

Sandilya Theuerkauf’s artworks are made in and inspired by the Deccan scrublands of southern India, and his unlikely muse and primary raw materials are the thorns, tree bark and stones found in the region. Theuerkauf creates complex intricate assemblages and unique tapestries woven thickly with these natural materials, that throw light on these often concealed and usually unseen elements of the natural world into focus. Barks of all kinds, from different species of trees, are mounted onto solid wood planks to create unique patterns, playing with form, texture and only the natural colours of the material. Theuerkauf’s works are visceral and tactile and his art-making process is equally physical, involving using his whole body as well as engaging deeply with the land he inhabits.

PUVIYARASU KANNADASAN

Emerging artist Puviyarasu Kannadasan’s pen and ink drawings capture the pristine, pastoral beauty of Tamil Nadu’s countryside. The artworks are set in his hometown Arani in Tiruvallur, where he heads off on his bike early in the mornings to capture landscapes and settings that catch his eye, along with his drawing materials and easel. The unhurried pace, deep silences and unspoilt, poetic beauty of the rural countryside comes alive in his beautifully lit, monotone landscapes. Humans do not occupy centrestage in his art but are depicted as part of the larger picture. The silhouettes of men and women at work in the paddy fields or walking against natural backdrops show them as a part of the land.

THALAMUTHU

Thalamuthu’s wood and copper sculptures reflect the eternal bond between nature and humanity and attempt to reawaken our fading connection with it. Everything that Thalamuthu expresses in his art is drawn from the natural world: it is a teacher, companion and the source of all universal experiences, including our instinctive emotions like anger and joy. Emphasising the seed as the origin of all life, his art focuses on agriculture as well as the impact of urbanisation on rural landscapes. Firmly rooted in the ground, his earthy works capture the constantly changing state of nature and highlight the lessons that nature teaches us.

BASUKI DASGUPTA

Basuki Dasgupta transforms the forces and elements of nature like ocean waves, the sun and the plains of West Bengal into geometric shapes and intricate patterns inspired by the terracotta temples of Bishnupur (where the artist grew up). The earthy sensations and rough hewn textures found in the natural world and the temples of his childhood are replicated in his abstract, tactile murals. Immersed in this non-figurative universe are stylized, puppet-like tigers and trees which take their cues from Pat Chitra, an age-old folk art from Bengal. The blending and splitting of figures and patterns signify the interconnectedness of life and the coming together of various polarities – nature and humans, rustic and urban, earthly and divine.

MANISH CHAVDA

Manish Chavda’s artworks exude a quiet meditative calm and evoke the serenity, stillness and tranquility of nature. Pairs of vibrantly coloured birds nestle between ethereal, diaphanous leaves that unfurl like natural mandalas. Soft, translucent gradations of blue and pink in a multitude of layers create a feeling of flow in sparsely populated oils on canvas. Leaving the chaotic notes of modern life behind, Chavda views nature and its inhabitants as a conduit to access the inner world and a space to retreat and still ourselves. In his paintings, it is not just a physical habitat, but a feeling and a state of mind that we carry within.

MADAN MEENA

Madan Meena reanimates folk art from the nomadic Meena tribe of Rajasthan, a region from where he hails. Drawing inspiration from Rajasthani miniature painting traditions and wall art by Meena women, the distinctly contemporary works reflect a deep rooted connection to the land and the timeless relationship between man and nature. Lyrical silk screen prints trace the changing seasons through ‘Barahamas’ or twelve months from Chaitra (spring) to Shrawan (monsoon), using the motifs of indigenous animals, birds and trees. Leaping Ranthambore tigers, saur cranes, parrots, mynahs, and mango and banyan trees portrayed in exuberant colours contrast with Intricate nature-based motifs in a minimalist palette of black and white. Nature in all its shifting cycles and moods becomes a metaphor to reflect our own emotions and states of mind.

Priyanka Aelay

Steeped in atmospheric shades of lilac and lavender, Priyanka Aelay’s art unfolds like a fable or folktale set in an enchanted forest at dusk. The folksy, magic realist wilderness is depicted in intricate layers and interconnected webs – exquisitely detailed plants, trees, flowers, and foxes, leopards and birds are part of the same whimsical tapestry in her acrylics on linen. Nature (as seen through her unique vision), folk tales and indigenous flora and fauna serve as the main sources of inspiration alongside indigenous art and storytelling from Telangana and Mughal and Rajput miniature painting. Playing with perspective and dimension, Aelay creates free-floating forestscapes that transcend time and space and invite us to explore them.

GANAPATI HEGDE

The dense coastal forests of South Kanara form the setting for Ganapati Hegde’s paintings, reflecting his deep love for nature and the land that he grew up in. A profusion of indigenous plants, flowers, birds, animals and insects revelling in bright blues, reds, pinks and greens convey the vibrancy and aliveness of the natural world. The acrylics on canvas are layered with unexpected elements: Hegde’s jungle is inhabited by creatures that are often humanised. A Parakeet, for instance, is draped in an elegant, traditional shawl, while a boss like Frog sternly stares at us from the comfort of his bright orange bean-bag. This unusual juxtaposition signifies that human and natural worlds are interlinked and we are all part of the circle of life.

VENUGOPAL VG

Venugopal VG’s art is a means of intimately connecting with the place and time we live in. His watercolour paintings offer an arresting visual exploration of themes such as urban migration, encroachment and displacement. The multidisciplinary artist is a keen observer of urban habitats, changing environments and human relationships and sensibilities. With his unique vision and imagination, Venugopal turns issues like the erosion of nature and the human struggle for identity into powerful images: raw earth extrudes out of the window of a home, a cross section of a mountain sits in a pool and a robotic hand holds a flower. The natural and human worlds grow into one another and the juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements shows the physical and psychological impact of our modern lifestyles. The images also seem to float in white space, highlighting a sense of disembodiment and groundlessness.

RAKHEE SHENOY

Rakhee Shenoy’s surreal still life collages transport you to a realm of wonder, comfort and escape. The textile artist’s dreamy works delight in the art of crossovers and flipping how we view reality. Layered and fluid mixed media works merge internal and external worlds as they spill over onto a single frame. Personal objects, memories and machines share space with wildflowers, vegetation, fruits and insects in a mind-bending mish-mash. A fish swims over a bowl of oranges and past a grocery bag over which an ant makes its way. With intriguing layers, textures, textual details, the artworks are made using embroidery, painting, hand-drawing and digital art. Shenoy adds symbols of personal significance and nature-based muses like silk moths, butterflies and fish, which represent freedom and beauty.
